So, You Wanna Become A Ninja

I don’t know if you are like me, but as a kid I dreamed of someday becoming a ninja.  I remember bugging my mom to find a place where I could train to become a ninja so she found me (like every other kid in America) a Taekwondo school.  “This is a start” I thought to myself. Even though I have to admit I have some of the cool ninja weapons I have pretty much given up on the dream.  But, I still carry a very bizarre fascination with it.  Whether the Ninja’s were turtles or a person I soaked it all up.

The influx of Japanese culture we’ve seen in the last ten years has brought the martial art Ninjutsu with it and it’s never been more popular. The very careful and deliberate style of Ninjutsu, which is a far cry from what is featured in most ninja movies, emphasizes maintaining control of the battle at all times and ending it quickly. If you are willing to commit to those rules, you should have no trouble picking it up. Bearing that in mind, there are some things to consider before beginning.

Whether you’re planning to learn the art at home or go to a dojo, there are a few things you’ll need to do first. First, you’re going to need some loose fitting clothing to practice in. Please, don’t go out and splurge on a full blown ninja uniform, yet.  A pair of comfortable pants and a t shirt work just as well and will be much cheaper. You’re also going to need to secure free time for practice every day or at least 4 times per week. If you’re training at home, this is as simple as making sure to set aside an hour or so each day, if possible. If you’re going to a dojo, simply look at the schedule to find what class works best for you.

Most people teaching ninjutsu are legitimate instructors in the art of the ninja, but as recently as a few years ago there were issues with people claiming to be sensei’s after they watched a few tapes. Despite it being less of a problem now, if you’re going to a dojo, do an online search on your teacher to check their credentials. The same things apply if you’re learning from DVDs or a YouTube Channel. A quick internet search will usually tell you everything you need to know. The last thing you want is to find out you wasted a few hundred dollars and several months for no gain.

It is essential to realize that if you’re planning on studying the way of the ninja is that it will require dedication and determination. It is a highly effective style, but it requires a lot of training to become proficient in. This isn’t to say that you’ll need to train for four hours every day. You can practice on the weekends if you don’t have availability to train daily. The important thing is that once you set your schedule you need to stick to it. As long as you keep all of these simple tips in mind, you’ll be ready to start ninjutsu training.

Martial Art Styles & Their Uniforms

The conventional combat trainings and exercises are called Martial arts and increasing the stamina and inner soul powers of men is the way in which it is accomplished.  Martial art is the practice of using your latent power. It encompasses mental and physical fitness as well as self-defense.  Standard games these days must follow regulations with regards to different martial arts and sports uniforms, including:

Karate Uniform - Also known as a GI, this is is the standard uniform for Karate.  Karate uniforms are much lighter and looser when compared to those of other sports. There are three cuts of karate uniforms: Kata, European, and Japanese. Each one can not weigh more than 16 ounces.  The Japanese style favors longer cuts for the sleeves and trouser cuffs in contrast to the European style of shorter cuts and cuffs.  The Karate gi comes in various styles and color such as black, red, blue, and white. 

Taekwondo is Korea’s national sport, and its uniform is known as a dobok.  White colored uniforms are generally used but black or some other color dobok along with a belt tied around the waist is also in use.  There are three different jacket styles to choose from for the Taekwondo uniform.

Judo Uniform - The Judogi is made from traditional fibers and is similar to the Karate uniform.  The uniforms are traditionally blue or white for Judo competitions, and a participant will be disqualified for wearing a non-standard uniform.

BJJ Gi - Jiu Jitsu is a Brazilian martial art that takes its basic forms from Japanese combat sports.  Heavy cotton pants and jacket with a belt to keep the jacket in place make-up the BJJ Gi.  During regulation matches, blue, black and white are the only colors allowed on the mat. 

Combat Sport Weapons - These weapons look like traditional martial arts weapons, but they are made from safer materials such as wood, rubber, or foam.

Warrior: The Best MMA Movie I Have Seen So Far!

Okay yeah so I know I’m late to the game, however I just finished watching “Warrior” the MMA movie that came out in 2011.  It was excellent an excellent movie that is about two brothers (along with their father played by Nick Nolte) fighting their own demons and attempting to conquer them through MMA fighting. Though each of them take very different paths to conquer their demons they (spoiler alert) come together in the end. 

Background:

The Collins family who’s father is Paddy (played by Nick Nolte) is made up of the older brother Brendan and the younger brother named Tommy.  The younger brother Tommy is fighting demons with being in war while the older brother has hit some financial troubles.  They both train in MMA in two very different environments but in this movie they both work to get them where they want to go.  The big championship tournament they are gunning for is the Spartan MMA Championship.

I even checked on Amazon to see the ratings as you can see below there are 170 people that agree with me.

So, if you haven’t already checked out the Warrior then I would highly recommend you rent it on your next movie night.

Great post (love the honesty and insight) from Reilly.  Hey Reilly, you mention you are feeling great right now but don’t race for another 18 days.  Make sure you don’t burn yourself out..  Good post keep it up

Purplepatch Big Kidz Summer Camp!
I train like a cowboy. There are surely other ways to put it, but that’s how I’m putting it. I see my progression as a line going up. A while back it started low, and now it’s higher. A week from now, month from now, year from now, it will be higher, higher and higher. Before workouts, there is always a discussion about what my victory can be for the coming day. Days are made of three approaches - below the bar, at the bar, or smashing through the bar. Days and their durations vary based on where I am in the season, what’s approaching, and where I’m headed. And that’s about it. I don’t use a heart rate monitor, or power on my bike - not that I’m adverse to either of them, or anything…I just don’t. For a while, I was writing down all of my workouts. Then I stopped and haven’t been. Now I’m about to say probably the worst thing you could ever say to a coach you respect — it’s all in my head. Up until this point, for the most part, things have been working. I’m getting faster, and keeping myself under control, and feel myself growing every day and through every effort. But let’s be realistic for ONCE on here. Someday, the line is going to slow. The way I see it, if you aren’t three steps ahead in this game, you’re falling behind. I mean, someday it HAS to slow, right?
Tomorrow, I’m heading up to Agoura Hills to link up with Matt Dixon and Purplepatch for a 4 day summer training camp. Right now, I feel pretty indestructible and don’t race for another 18 days, so really, I’m just looking forward to taking whatever is given out. I’m very fortunate to have such a great and supportive resource like Gerry and Tower 26 - and Purplepatch is an extension of him…or he is an extension of that. This is me trying to sound concurrently, thoroughly respectful on two fronts with mild success. Let’s be real - they’re both as good at what they do as anyone in the world. I know I can feed off this camp, and it could not come at a better time. Big races are always coming, but the BIG ONES are coming. My greatest strength in this sport is that I’ll probably never get over this feeling that I don’t belong - like every time I walk up to the line, I’m crashing some kids’ sandbox I’m not supposed to crash. And they’re pointing at me and talking about me behind my back and whispering and laughing. In the hands of trusted advisors, although slightly psychotic, I know this a seed capable of major growth. There is plenty of fight in me, but no “This is the way I’ve been doing it” fight in me. I only want to listen and get broken. Very excited.
